Joe and Catherine Williams are sponsoring their 3rd Annual Fundraiser “Champion of Challenge”! Raising awareness and funds to support the programs of The Wellness Community-West Los Angeles. And this year, they are focused and even more determined to reach the African American community with an important and life saving message, “Be screened early and get treatment soon after a diagnosis. Delaying is not an option”. “And before, during or after your cancer treatment – go to The Wellness Community and get the support, education and hope you’ll need to get through this experience.”

An Evening with Focus! The funds raised that evening will be used to train African American psychotherapists in The Wellness Community methodology of facilitating group support for people affected with cancer. Upon completion of the 60 hour intensive training module, the psychotherapists will be ready to serve our community! Let’s get cancer out of the hush-hush and into the spotlight so we can make a difference in the lives of African Americans.

This event has grown due to the strong support of those that have attended in the recent years-Thank You. So please join Catherine and Joe this year as they continue to “make a difference” by attending the “Champion of Challenge” on Saturday, August 7th at the historical Cicada Restaurant 617 Olive Street in downtown Los Angeles.

JUST the FACTS:

According to the American Cancer Society (Cancer Facts & Figures for African Americans 2009-2010) African Americans have the highest death rate and shortest survival of any racial and ethnic group in the US for most cancers. The causes of these inequalities are complex and are thought to reflect social and economic disparities more than biologic differences associated with race. These include inequalities in work, wealth, income, education, housing and overall standard of living, barriers to high-quality health care, and racial discrimination.

Although the overall racial disparity in cancer death rates is decreasing, in 2005, the death rate for all cancers combined continued to be 33% higher in African American men and 16% higher in African American women than in white men and women, respectively.

The most commonly diagnosed cancers among African American men are prostate (34%), lung (16%), and colon and rectum (10%). Among African American women, the most common cancers are breast (25%), lung (12%), and colon and rectum (11%).

The full report can be found here.

Lee National Denim Day

October 8, 2010

Since its inception in 1996, Lee National Denim Day has adhered to a simple philosophy: one day, one cause, one cure®. In 14 years, that philosophy has become a mantra for millions and has made an impact Lee Jeans never dreamed possible.

It all started when several Lee Jeans employees realized that each of them, in one form or another, had been touched by breast cancer. An everyday conversation sparked an idea and led to the creation of Lee National Denim Day, which has become one of the largest single-day fundraisers nationwide for breast cancer.

In its first year, Lee Jeans set a goal of raising $1 million on Lee National Denim Day. To do this, Lee Jeans invited companies to go casual for a cause, inviting employees to wear their jeans to work on Denim Day in exchange for a $5 contribution to the fight against breast cancer. The underlying concept behind the program was simple - by convincing enough people to take one small step, together they could reach an incredible goal.

The response to the inaugural Lee National Denim Day program was astounding. That year, more than 3,000 companies signed up to participate, raising $1.4 million dollars for the fight against breast cancer, setting the stage for what would become one of the most captivating social action campaigns in the country.

Since its first year, Lee National Denim Day has raised nearly $80 million for the fight against breast cancer and unites nearly one million supporters nationwide each year.

To participate in Lee National Denim Day, you can coordinate a team or make an individual contribution. Select one of the options below to get started! Proceeds raised will benefit Women's Cancer Programs of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, including our national headquarters, the Cancer Support Community.
